
The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) welcomed Their Excellencies, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgroveto the Torres Strait on Thursday 9 August.
Their Excellencies were greeted on arrival on Thursday Island by Mayor Vonda Malone of the Torres Shire Council (TSC), Chair Napau Pedro Stephen AM of the TSRA and Cr. David Bosun representing the Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC).
The Governor General and Lady Cosgrove will be officially welcomed at a civic reception at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday 9 August at 6pm.
TSRA Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM, saidit was a significant moment for the Torres Strait, and one that is gladly received by the TSRA and the Torres Strait community.
“It will be a great opportunity for His Excellency to experience first-hand our culture and the diverse geography that makes up the region,” Mr Stephen said.
“The Torres Strait is a very strategic part of Australia, and one that not many people visit, so hosting the Governor General and Lady Cosgrove is a significant event for our community.”
The Governor General and Lady Cosgrove will tour Thursday Island, Mer and Badu as they visit schools and TAFE colleges and engage with local community leaders and representativesand learn more about the region.
